I might not have all of the secrets to “mamahood” figured out, but I do know this – never be afraid to ask for help! This rule also applies to healthy living, y’all. When it comes to better health and nutrition, I know I can take on Mamahood with #WhatSupp.
It isn’t always (actually hardly ever) easy to get from “good morning” to “good night” in the real world of mamahood alone. As far as healthy living goes, I do my best to set a good example for our little one by incorporating as many whole foods into our diet as possible. We raise the majority of our own food on the family farm. My husband and I are tremendously passionate about fueling our own bodies with nutrition packed meals and snacks.
So WHY take supplements?
I fit supplements into my daily healthy living routine for these 3 reasons:
1. Food Alone Just isn’t Enough
As much as I wish this wasn’t the case, it’s the current reality. Over the years, our soil has been depleted of what was once an abundance of minerals. On our sustainable family farmstead, we do as much as we can with composting & adding minerals back to the soil in their natural forms. Even with a top notch whole food diet in your healthy living arsenal, supplements are there to do just what their name implies – supplement! A daily multi-mineral & multi-vitamin are included in my daily supplement routine to give me that extra boost of overall nutrients.
2. Year Round Immunity Booster
Immunity boosters are often only highly focused upon seasonally. At our house, we like to support our immune system year round. When it comes to immune boosting supplements, I like to include an array of forms & types. From probiotics in the morning to a home brewed elderberry kombucha in the afternoon, I’m constantly finding ways to keep my immune system strong. Vitamin D finds its way into my body in all different forms. Sunshine is my first choice of course, but I also keep it in my system via a supplement blend of Vitamin D3 with some Vitamin K2 thrown in there.
3. Good Night’s Rest
This is probably one of the areas I’ve been working on the most here lately. I seem to go through seasons of being a rock hard, “nothing can wake me up” sleeper, to the complete opposite side of the typical mama, sleep deprived sleeping spectrum. I have found that when I’m supplementing with magnesium, taurine, & special night time tea blends, I get my best rest. I’ve especially been keen about my latest blend of chamomile & lavender tea to wind down with each evening. On a side note, that specific night time blend is what I supplemented/replaced Klaire’s night time nursing session with during the weening process a couple months ago.
Now keep in mind, everyone is different when it comes to what supplements their unique body needs. Over the years, I have found blood tests, hair mineral analysis, & saliva testing to be particularly useful in finding the right regimen for myself. I also like to give my body a break from supplements for short periods of time. That’s what works for me at least.
