Did you ever feel like you have stuff to talk about but don’t have an audience? I mean yeah, I have this blog BUT when I comes to sharing all the little things that I’m obsessing over, I don’t always have a way to collectively share them with all of you. Like these AMAZING flowers!
And that makes me so annoyed.
Before we had true, uncensored, social media but now it’s all gone to shit.
Social Media has become such a Debbie-downer in my life. For the first several years of my blogging career, the main highlight was this community that I was building on Facebook but then FB decided to change the way that they shared business page posts, thus greatly reducing my ability to reach my followers without paying. Paying as in THOUSANDS of dollars per post just to show a small fraction of my followers.
Then I was so happy to hang with you all on Instagram until they decided to do something similar… instead of showing you what people are posting in order, they pick and choose what you should see instead.
Why can’t we just see what the people we choose to like/follow posted, in the order in which they posted it? Can I get an AMEN?
There’s plenty of bloggers spending tons of time and money finding workarounds right now, only for it to all be changed again in a few weeks and then have to start over figuring out tips and tricks again.
I opt’ed out of all that chaos. I refuse to chase my tail, instead I just keep doing me and hang out here a little more.
While I still post on social media, it’s not like it was.
And I miss you.
Do you miss me??
Anyways, this monthly series is going to be a fun way for me to recap what my recent favorite things are. What’s happening in my life and help to reconnect with all of you!
What’s New & Good…
November has been an AWESOME month with 2 super cool things going on at HSITK HQ. Possibly the BEST month I’ve ever had as a biz owner.
It’s busy month for me… behind the scenes I’ve been working my tail off on my office remodel AND incase you missed the big announcement, Karli joined the HSITK team as a contributor!
Here’s the thing, I’ve been a “blogger” for 7 years BUT we (hubby and I) never really committed or rather wanted to commit to, my profession. This is hard to explain. It’s like we were afraid that if we ‘banked’ on my job that I’d fail or become bored or I guess we feared it would all come to an end… both when it comes to my work space and my team.
2017 has proven to us that my job really is real – and it’s due time for me to have a creative inspiring space to work in and time to build a team to share my success.
I’m 75% done in the office, just a few final things need to be bought/found and perfected. Look for my big reveal in December!
And if you didn’t guess, I’m totes in love with Karli – I simply cannot imagine another human I’m more excited to share HISKT with than her. She’s a homesteading momma who’s kind and sweet and isn’t afraid to work her @ss off.
What I’m Reading…
Part of my office remodel included sharing my book collection with friends and family, instead of hoarding them to sit on shelves and collect dust. My ‘pay it forward’ approach to my extensive library of books inspired my good friends Caitlin at The Yoga Garden to create a community lending library at her studio, with an awesome initial donation of books from me to get the reading-party-started.
So instead of filling my shelves with books – Did you know that I’m a high volume reader!?! I switched to reading exclusively on my Kindle Fire. I decided to use a kindle for reading (as opposed to one of our iPads) is that it’s easier to stay focused on reading and not get sidetracked with apps, email and work.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty to do on a Kindle, but I simply refuse to explore beyond reading and shopping for books. I currently have THIS $49 Kindle Fire but I just – like literally just clicked the payment button – just ordered the new Kindle Oasis for a more dedicated eReader with less fuss…. any thoughts? any feedback? What sold me is that it’s waterproof, super lightweight and I want LESS options on my eReader.. it’s not shipping until 12/11, if you think I made a mistake let me know STAT.
I’m currently reading Chris Kresser’s Unconventional Medicine, I highly recommend it to EVERYONE who gives a sh*t about their health. So pick up a copy, or *AHEM* rather download it to your kindle.
What I’m Wearing…
I sincerely LOVE cold weather. Yes. I’m in the minority, I’m sure. I get giddy with excitement when fall arrives and I can (finally) pack away my summer clothes and transition to boots and sweaters.
This section isn’t going to turn into one of those OOTD fashion areas, don’t worry. I mean really, I pretty much wear the same clothes at LEAST 3 days a week since I work from home. But I do want to share with all of you the functional and still yet fashionable clothes, shoes, etc that I’m loving in my life.
Part of the office remodel (notice a trend in this post?!) included my mom and I taking a day to do some office furniture shopping at Ikea using Mom’s truck… While we were out in the Robinson/Pittsburgh area of course we just HAD to stop at Duluth Trading, where I picked up the most amazingly warm and functional Souped-Up Sweat Robe.
Now do you see what I mean about this isn’t a fashion feature?! I’m literally talking about a zip up, sweatshirt robe.
I wear my robe every day, since we keep our house super chilly all winter (mostly in the 50’s) having warm layers is essential. My new robe is truly November Favorite thing! No more belt to come untied or tangled in the clothes dryer. No collars to fuss with. Plenty long enough and OMG – I almost forgot to mention – the POCKETS! The pockets are big and deep, no more iPhone spilling out easily.
Oh, yeah my mom got a robe too and she loves hers just as much as I do.
I’ve had this thing with demin overalls since the 90’s – when they went out of style I resisted and continued wearing them for the past 25 years, even though I shouldn’t have. I knew better but I didn’t care.
While I didn’t rock them out to dinner or anything, if you know me IRL then you’ve probably at least once questioned my sense of style when I still wore my baggy overalls way past their prime.
When my friend Tracy at Shutterbean popped up in her Insta-Story wearing gorgeous baggy overalls, I had to reach out; Tell me about those overalls, Girl!
Can you believe, baggy overalls are officially back in style people!??!? or at least Tracy, I and the GAP say that they are!
These cropped, baggy overalls are simply amazing. SO amazing that when I put them for the first time, I immediately sat down to order a 2nd pair. You know, one for dress and one for play. A girl can never have too many overalls and I learned that they will go out of style and I’m not making the mistake of not being prepared again.
But I forgot to actually ORDER them. Then I realized that they were out of stock- BOO
Mom to the rescue, she dropped everything and went to her local GAP to pick me up a 2nd pair – Thanks Mom!
I’m a size 12 and I got a XL to make sure they are a nice, comfy baggy fit. And I’m not afraid to admit that I do wear these AT LEAST 3 days a week.
Going along with my new robe and overalls, which pretty much is my everyday work uniform, I splurged on a new pair of house-shoes.
They are NOT slippers. They are HOUSE SHOES, you know, shoes you wear in the house. Or in my case, to my new office!
They are just super comfy and happen to be shearling lined and soft soled, moccasins.
Ok they PROBABLY are classified at slippers but who’s keeping track.
Minnetonka has been my favorite moccasin brand for YEARS and I’m really happy to put these on every day. They are soft, warm and comfortable. And if I meet the Dave (our UPS guy) or the Mail Lady in the driveway, I don’t have on obvious slippers. I wear a 8.5 shoe, I got the size 9 but in hindsight I think the 8 would have been better. The 9’s are just a tad roomy after stretching out. My next pair (yes, I’m totes planning to replaces these with another pair of the same) will be a size 8 for sure.
My Healthy Living Favorites…
Being a ‘blogger’ has amazing perks, yet those perks are also kinda challenging.
For example, you all know how much I sincerely, honestly and authentically LOVE Beautycounter, not the performance of their products but also their company mission… but see there’s other amazing brands and other awesome products. Other awesome products that just beg for me to try.
Like when my BFFs at Rocky Mountain Oils launched their new Tohi Skincare Line and they generously sent me a SURPRISE package of goodies….
On one hand, I’m loving my BC and wowed by the countermatch line that I just started using, but on the other hand, I have pretty new products that are enticing me to try.
This happens all the time.
Ok not just in the beauty category but my life generally speaking.
What’s a blogger to do?
I’ll tell you what we do, we push up our sleeves and wash our faces with the new facial cleanser, then follow with the moisturizer, that’s what we do.
You never know, unless you try.
Honestly, my intention was to just try out the Deep Radiance Cleanser and Sacred Skin Moisturizer, assuming that within a week I’d be back to BC, but It’s been a solid 2 weeks and I’m still using the RMO products. It’s too soon to tell if they are all that and a bag of chips, but I do know that my skin feels good and looks good. So I’ll just keep on keeping on.
The one thing about the cleanser that I REALLY like is that you apply it on DRY skin but it’s not a oil, it’s a gel. Then when you add water (to rinse) it gets lightly foamy. And it smells good.
If you are looking for a simple and healthy skincare line, I can confidently say that RMO’S New Tohi Facial Cleaner and Moisturizer is definitely worth a try!
I’ve also shared some fun Healthy Living Posts this month, too!
What I’m Eating…
Much like colder temps invite warm clothes, it also brings on the comfort food cravings! But here’s the thing, right after Thanksgiving I committed to a Holiday Keto Fast (basically my own unique ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting blended in)
The very last thing that I want to do is gain a few pounds while over indulging over the holiday seasons, so I decided to give myself a reason to opt out of holiday treats completely by focusing this time of the year on my own health. So if you invite me to your party or dinner, be prepared I’m not going to budge on my strict way of eating!
Our spring break/15th wedding anniversary Mexican vacation celebration will be here before you know it and I want to get a jump stat on my vacay-bod.
This is week 1 and it’s my “get your head right” adjustment period where I’m not overly obsessed with the finer details but simply intuitively eating fats/proteins and avoiding carbs like the plague. I am not tracking my macros or calories, just eating… well… animals, with a little extra fat and a garnish of plants.. and 2 cups of black coffee before noon.
- Yesterday’s Example: 2 cups black coffee, Noon: baked red fish with lemon/butter and a few broccoli spears, 6 pm: lettuce w/keto creamy Italian dressing and crispy chicken skin cracklings.
- Today’s Plan: 2 cups black coffee, Noon: Sardine Salad (sardines, celery, may0), Dinner: Seared venison with cauliflower rice.
The first week, when your body is adjusting from running on glucose (carbs) to running on fat, you are typically cranky while adjusting. Maybe you get a headache, your overly focused on food and what you can’t have… instead I’m choosing to focus my thoughts (and meals) on what I CAN eat. I plan to keep this approach going until it stop working.
So far I’ve dropped a quick 8 pounds and don’t feel deprived. My ketone (blood) reading is .6 this morning, so I’m transitioning nicely. As you become more and more fat adapted, you are less and less hungry.. which makes longer fasting easier.
Oh, yeah, other than ghee/butter I’m also avoiding dairy because I suspect it’s an issue for me, I’ve noticed that I get an allergy flare up when I eat some types of dairy, why not use this 25 days as an elimination diet too!
In other food news, here’s some new-healthy-delicousness for your eating pleasure:
My Final Thoughts for this Month…..
Life is honestly so good. Very Very Good. I have an amazing business that I built with my very own hands, based in my own home and surround by the supportive love of my awesome hubby — and NOW Karli on the team!!! WootWoot!
- This month we had the kids from Footprints Farm spend the night at our house and had a french fry party, then celebrated Hannah’s 5th Birthday with a bowling party. I don’t really “like” kids but I LOVE those kids.
- Argos got too excited and ran his shoulder right into my eye socket, but luckily I didn’t get a blackeye but boy did my head hurt for DAYS!
- We decided to go out to eat for Thanksgiving dinner, instead of cooking a giant meal for just 4 people. And it was FABULOUS!
- It’s officially hunting/rifle season, while I didn’t get a buck YET I’m still hopeful with another full week of hunting time in December. At the very least, I need to get one doe!
I’m looking forward to finishing out 2017 very strong biz-wise, very healthy and hopefully a few pounds lighter. I have a few December surprises lined up for the blog like posts about THIS amazing brand, THIS fun gadget and THESE keto-diet-essentials, PLUS Karli is going host a Beautycounter Giveaway, we have at LEAST 8 new recipes in the works & some fun last minute holiday gift giving ideas for everyone on your list.
Oh and an amazing guest post by a photographer/yogi/friend!! <—- You are going to LOVE it.
I’m also LOVING this cross-stitch that my mom made me, It’s sitting on my desk as a great reminder that we don’t need to worry about things that are outside of our control….
I hope you enjoy this tiny peek into my favorite things. I want to hear your feedback… what do you want to see more of?.. what topics do you dislike??.. How are YOU doing?.. How can I help you to lead a HEALTHIER life??
Yours in Health,
