Why an Organized Closet is Good for your Health

When we talk about healthy living, too often we focus solely on eating and exercise, but there’s so much more to leading a healthier life than food and activity alone.

Studies have proven that our surroundings (whether organized or cluttered) can make a profound impact on both our physical and emotional health.

According to a study in the journal Psychological Science “Clutter is stressful for the brain, so you’re more likely to resort to coping mechanisms such as choosing comfort foods or overeating than if you spend time in neater surroundings,” Eva Selhub, M.D. says. By clearing away the clutter, you’ll make healthier choices, improve your relationships, and even boost your workout.

Women who described their homes as “cluttered” were more depressed, fatigued, and had higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol than women who felt their homes were organized according to a study in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.

It’s no wonder that when you start everyday rummaging through a cluttered, messy closet, it can take a toll on your health by preventing the natural decline in cortisol that occurs over the course of the day.

Taking the time to organize your closet won’t just clear away the physical stuff, it’ll actually help you feel happier and more relaxed!

For most of my life, I tried to fill voids in my life with stuff and things. Specifically, my shopping-drug of choice was most often clothes and shoes.  I spent thousands of dollars filling my closet while making me feel more and more empty.

Not only was the emptiness in terms of my bank account but also emotionally. The more “stuff” I accumulated, instead of feeling better it drowned me in clutter. As I become increasingly passionate about health and wellness, naturally I began to understand the health risk in my overflowing closet.

Over the past year, I’ve purged much of my accumulated wardrobe. And I can say first hand that releasing these possessions have made me feel lighter and healthier than ever.

But even though I have less “stuff” — my closet still was a complete mess most of the time, causing me stress anytime I got dressed or put laundry away.

I always dreamed of a beautiful closet that was organized and easy to navigate, but it was impossible to achieve with the constant overflow. Now that I had less things I needed to find a way to make my closet function better.

Perhaps the only thing more difficult than taking the time to get organized, is figuring out HOW to get organized.

How to Organize your Closet for a Healthier Life

I just popped down the Closet Organization Aisle at my local Lowe’s and grabbed one box – before you know it I was back home and ready to start my demo.

Let me first state that I am not very good with tools and especially not using the drill. But it only took me 2 cups of coffee and 2 hours from start to take my closet from unhealthy to healthy.

Doesn’t it look AMAZING????

I’m so seriously impressed that for such a small investment of about $100 and less than 2 hours of time, I completely made over my closet – best yet, all by myself while Ray was at work.

No more junk on the floor and I was able to move my shoes from the closet door into the closet itself.

The Rubbermaid HomeFree Series 4-8 foot kit came with everything that I needed, except for a drill and level.  Easy Peasy.

Rubbermaid HomeFree Series is a uniquely flexible closet system where shelves expand by overlapping, so you can use every inch of your closet without having to cut the shelves. There is no cutting necessary! The hang rods telescope, allowing the flexibility to adjust your hanging space as needed, and with add on shoe shelves, cubes and drawers, you can truly make the most of your space.

If you do any home improvement & DIY projects, then you know that there’s always that one thing (or more) that’s unique to your situation. This time the very minor hiccup that I encountered during the installation is that our drywall is VERY thin and delicate so I opted to utilize the studs and not the anchors, which gave me the same end result but the wall mounted supports aren’t spaced exactly like the instructions said.

But the awesome thing is that the Rubbermaid HomeFree Series 4-8 foot kit is so versatile and adaptable that I was easily able to make the necessary minor modification and it worked perfectly.

There is one major bummer of this project —- it’s that I waited 16 years to make such an easy change to something that impacts my health every day!

Don’t make my same mistake, Get Healthier! Organize your Closet Too!
