Bone Broth Latte, Breakfast in a mug!

Bone Broth Latte - The most delicious and nutritious way to start your day! You’re probably thinking I’ve completely lost my mind. Bone Broth Latte, WTF?  Don’t run away screaming just yet, let me explain.

What if I told you that you can transform a plain-jane mug of bone broth into a delicious, creamy, frothy morning drink, that’s chock-full of healthy fats AND protein! It is my new breakfast in a mug.

We all know that bone broth is one of the most nutritious foods (if you don’t know about the health benefits of bone broth click HERE) and strive to drink it regularly. However, it can get boring drinking bone broth all.the.time, right?? Especially when you’re adding to an ever increasing list of fabulous healthy foods you’re trying to squeeze in everyday!

As a long time fan of Bulletproof Coffee or as I call it, Frothy Coffee… I was sad when Dr Mallon told me to give up my frothy coffee and eat breakfast first thing in the morning instead, in order to help heal my adrenals. I’m not someone who enjoys eating first thing in the morning, I’m not typically ready to eat anything until I’ve been awake for several hours, most days I’m not even hungry until lunch! And when I’d have my Frothy Coffee, I’d have lots of energy, be super focused and often not even think about eating until dinner time (aka Intermittent Fasting and/or the Bulletproof Diet)

So, one day when I was heating my morning mug of bone broth and trying to figure out what to eat for breakfast, I had an idea…. if butter/mct oil is yummy blended into coffee, wouldn’t it also be good blended into my mug of broth?!? And the bone broth latte was born (or a frothy brothy as my husband likes to call it).

For a few days I was enjoying my Bone Broth Latte with a couple patties of my homemade country sausage for breakfast. But I still struggled to find even yummy sausage appealing in the morning.. so I started adding 2 scoops of collagen peptides to my bone broth latte to make it a complete breakfast!

You’re probably wondering what the heck collagen peptides are and why should you use them as a natural, healthy protein supplement??  I’ve become recently obsessed with them, I’m trying to increase my protein intake throughout the day (as opposed to eating most of my daily protein at dinner) as a part of my adrenal healing diet. And I’m not a fan of protein powders such as pea, hemp or whey protein.

Collagen Peptides are the most abundant protein in the body and is a key constituent of all connective tissues. Peptides are short chain amino acids naturally derived from collagen protein. These natural peptides are highly bio-available, digestible and soluble in hot or cold liquids. The intake of collagen ensures the cohesion, elasticity and regeneration of skin, hair tendon, cartilage, bones and joints.

Collagen is a natural and healthy ingredient that has been used for centuries. Collagen rich foods were a large part of traditional diets. Our ancestors utilized whole animal nutrition, which provided an abundance of collagen (the native form of gelatin).

  • Promotes youthful skin, healthier hair and stronger nails
  • Helps keep bones healthy and strong
  • Supports joint health
  • Natural glycine promotes a healthy immune system, digestive and central nervous system.

I’ve been using THIS brand of collagen peptides because they are sourced from pasture raised bovine hides from Brazil, which ensures a natural, high qulaity and sustainable source of this nutritional powerhouse. In addition to my bone broth latte, it’s also awesome to use in juices, smoothies and other beverages. It’s flavorless and won’t become clumpy or gel. I especially love it in my Mean Green Protein Drink (recipe coming soon).

Bone Broth Latte - The most delicious and nutritious way to start your day!

Now I get all the tremendous health benefits of bone broth, butter, coconut oil and collagen protein in before 8 am. All of those healthy fats keep me energized and focused, while not taxing my adrenals with the caffeine of coffee. It’s also perfect for anyone following a low-carb and/or ketogenic diet.

This information about “Bone Broth Latte, Breakfast in a mug” is an answer to prayer for me today! I heard, and then read about the Benefits of “Butter Coffee” aka Bulletproof Coffee. I am not a coffee drinker, or teas, as coffee bothers my stomach, and for some reason teas bothers my back. Thought maybe it was the Caffeine, but tried decaf, and the experience was the same. Also, my stomach is not ready for food until later in the day. Got up this morning with a prayer for guidance, as I’m dealing with a few health issues, and healing, which is the good news! I need to have breakfast and a healthy get me up and going boost…As I just shared, this information is an answer to prayer for me, for sure, and a definite 5’star article!

This is an answer to prayer for me! I don’t drink coffee, but after reading about the benefits of “Butter Coffee” aka Bulletproof Coffee, I actually considered trying to drink coffee, duhh
I just happened to have all of the ingredients mentioned, and I’m enjoying drinking this awesome nutritious beverage, as I write this comment.
Also, I have no appetite, or stomach for breakfast and/or eating early in the day.

5 stars for sure on this one!

  4. Personally, I’m baffled you would add collagen peptides in bone broth. Isn’t the point of making bone broth to extract the collagen from the bones and connective tissues being cooked? Why add extra?

    1. Baffled? Interesting. The intention of this recipe is to be breakfast in a mug. A breakfast that contains both fat and protein. I clearly say 2 scoops of peptides for additional protein, I’m
Not sure what so baffling about this?

All bone broths are not equal, less connective tissue yields less collagen. I take peptides every day as a part of my healthy diet, if you want to omit, feel free, they also do contribute to the frothy nature of this latte style drink.

  5. Old post, but just found it today.

I’m on an elimination diet and thus trying to stay clear of even MCT oil and butter/ghee at this point. I made this with some homemade beef broth that had the tallow (solid layer of beef fat) floating at the top of my mason jar. I used that as the fat, microwaved it, and whipped up for 20 seconds with my immersion blender. Mmmmm. My morning broth tastes so much better whipped rather than just heated. HIGHLY recommended. It is indeed a “frothy brothy.” Thanks for that name.

BTW just organic homemade beef broth made from lots of joints and tendons and with all the fat. No added collagen, just salt.

  6. gonna try this recipe! been looking for best drinks for morning. this is one of the best. thanks for sharing

  7. This was surprisingly tasty! However, about 15-20 minutes after I drank it I became so tired I had to lay down. I cold barely keep my eyes open. It lasted over an hour and then subsided. Any ideas? I know collagen is supposed to help with sleep but I mean really!!!

    Thanks,
    Libby

    1. Collagen is pure protein, it’s not that much of a sleep-inducing food…. is your body fat adapted or was this more fat than you typically consume in a meal?

      1. I am not sure. I am doing an elimination diet right now but I had been using butter to cook with and cream in coffee everyday. I thought I was eating fat but maybe I am not adapted…I didn’t get any digestive symptoms from it, just the fatigue…

        1. I suggest keep on your journey and pay attention to the signs. I like to suggest 50% of your diet coming form high quality healthy fats as a starting point.

  8. I know this is an old post, but I just started doing something similar with my bone broth and figured others had thought of it before me. I also add a bit of turmeric paste (often used for anti-inflammatory golden milk lattes). I think I like the taste of turmeric in savory things better than in milk, so it’s perfect!

  9. I am curious to know what it tastes like, because I am very interested in trying this but afraid I’ll be turned off by the taste.

    1. It is savory, creamy and smooth. To be honest, it tastes nothing like you would expect, it’s a very pleasant taste.

  10. Hayley! “Googling” to see if I was crazy for making buttered broth for breakfast. Clicked on the 3rd link and there’s a face I recognize!! You look great. Lovely blog. ZLAMM sister 🙂
