It’s hard to believe that the 2nd week of 2017 is already coming to a close. Time certainly does fly by. The best part of this week is by-far celebrating Hercules’ & Argos’ birthday!
When I was at the shelter applying to adopt Argos, I remember sitting on the floor watching him run around like a wild man, acknowledging that he was insanely cute, but thinking to myself, I’m not sure if I ‘FEEL IT’ with him.
With Hercules, I was worried he’d be just another puppy and since I already committed to him and drove 4 hours to pick him up, that I’d head home with a puppy who wasn’t right for us.
But when I greeted Herc & his litter mates, without any prompting, Hercules ran right to me, grabbed his collar (with his name tag on it) and headed to the car.
He didn’t let me hug or snuggle him, but he knew he was going in the car. That was all I needed.
So, when I was sitting there with Argos, I was super nervous because there wasn’t any ‘moment’ between us, telling me he’s mine. But as the lady told me about him and his life up to that point, she commented that surprisingly they knew his exact birthday because he was born at the shelter…
I started crying.
That was my sign.
What are the chances that Argos was born on Hercules’ birthday!?! My boys are growing up so fast, Hercules is 4 and Argos is 1.
WHAT’S NEW & EXCITING…
Ray and I are still fasting. Not in a hard-nosed way like my infamous October 31 Day Water Fast, but in a causal, intermittent schedule. Instead of feeling compelled to FAST for an extended, continuous time, we’re occasionally eating a healthy meal. Like last night, for example, we had some venison and a heaping plate of raw veggies w/homemade healthy ranch dip when we are bored with fasting.
We’re both feeling really good and have lost a few lbs (me -14 & Ray -19) since the first of the year. That’s the thing about fasting, the guaranteed results are hard to beat and unlike grazing/low-caloire diets & increased exercise, you do NOT damage your metabolism with fasting.
To learn more about Fasting for your health, I recommend THIS book.
WHAT I’M READING….
New week, new book. 52 books in 2017 won’t read themselves, right?? While I enjoy all sorts of books, it’s probably obvious that I most often lean towards healthy topics.
Fat is an obsession, a dirty word, a subject of national handwringing―and, according to biochemist Sylvia Tara, the least-understood part of our body.
You may not love your fat, but your body certainly does. In fact, your body is actually endowed with many self-defense measures to hold on to fat. For example, fat can use stem cells to regenerate; increase our appetite if it feels threatened; and use bacteria, genetics, and viruses to expand itself. The secret to losing twenty pounds? You have to work with your fat, not against it. Tara explains how your fat influences your appetite and willpower, how it defends itself when attacked, and why it grows back so quickly.
The Secret Life of Fat brings cutting-edge research together with historical perspectives to reveal fat’s true identity: an endocrine organ that, in the right amount, is critical to our health. Fat triggers puberty, enables our reproductive and immune systems, and even affects brain size.
Although we spend $60 billion annually fighting fat, our efforts are often misinformed and misdirected. Tara expertly illustrates the complex role that genetics, hormones, diet, exercise, and history play in our weight, and The Secret Life of Fat sets you on the path to beat the bulge once and for all.
DITCHING, SWITCHING & UPGRADING…
I’m so super exited to get my Tea-Game on point with my new Breville Tea Maker. I’ve recently (aka 2017) switched to drinking tea instead of coffee (most of the time).
It’s easy for coffee to turn into a meal with protein, fat and carbs – where as a cup of tea is essentially the equivalent to water.
As soon as I unboxed it, I quickly made a pot of chamomile tea to sip on. The beauty of this Breville Tea Maker is that it takes all the guess work out of brewing the perfect cup or pot of tea. You simply add your tea to the basket, add water and press the button for they type of tea your brewing and it does the rest. Selecting the perfect brewing temperature and steeping time. Then keeps it warm for 1/2 an hour.
4 THINGS I’M OBSESSED WITH…
While I’m always sharing the cuteness-overload of Hercules & Argos, they are far from perfect. The are rambunctious when we have visitors and insanely excited when mail/ups/fed-ex pulls in the drive way.
I can’t blame them, visitors and packages are super exciting, but they still need to learn to control their enthusiasm. Welcome the “Doggie Don’t” — I hate to say it but this little, remote control looking, sound making device is simply magic.
When the boys get too crazy I just press the button, a loud crackling sound emits and everything stops.
Especially with Hercules.Hercules is very trainable, but also very stubborn. When he’s in the crazy zone, it’s so hard to bring him back to focus. Doggie Don’t makes it impossible for him to stay in the other dimension, just one click and he’s siting/focused on me.
2. Shopping at Aldi
This week, I made a veggie & dip tray for a fundraiser that I attended. And in an effort to get the biggest bang for my buck, I went to Aldi for my veggies.
I was totally SHOCKED to see how amazing their selection of organic produce is – and all the easy gluten-free options.
The healthy-shopping Aldi hype is justified and I’m obsessed. All the veggies for my tray, which were mostly organic, cost less than $30.
And of course, I made my Healthy Homemade Ranch Dip, get the recipe HERE.
3. The Perfect, Everyday Bra
If you’ve ever met in person, you probably noticed that I’m a little blessed on top (36 g/h) and you’ll never hear me complain. Except when it comes to easy wearing, every day bras.
There’s such controversy about wearing bras (especially underwire bras) being unhealthy and since my lifestyle working at home is extremely casual.. there’s no reason for me to waste wearing out my uber expensive push up bras to hang out at home … and going completely all natural is out of the question (I’m a 36g/h depending on brand).
I’ve been buying-trying soft bras & sport bras for years, never finding one that fits quite right. To go large enough to fit the girls, the band is way too big, or the straps are too long, offering no support, when I bend over the girls tumble out, etc. Shockingly for less than $10, I found the perfect fit.
On a whim, I grabbed a medium in this SOFT BRA and amazingly, it fits. My girls don’t fall out. I don’t have uni-boob. And I have just enough support to not be embarrassed when company stops over and they are cute enough to wear to yoga (under a tank). The racerback version is really nice too, but since my torso is short/petite the back creeps up on my neck uncomfortably.
4. New Black Puma’s
I was looking for an inexpensive sneaker. You know for running errands and stuff. And I found these super cute Pumas – they are black with a fun rainbow twist.
Not only are the ultra comfortable but they were just $35. Click HERE to grab a pair for yourself.
Winter is the perfect season for binge watching tv series that you missed the first time around. I don’t know why Ray picked VEEP for us to watch, but I’m totally obsessed with the dysfunctional relationships on the show. (it’s hard to find things to watch in-between Game of Thrones and Prison Break seasons!)
I seriously feel uncomfortably anxious for the main characters, but like a train wreck, can’t force myself to look away. It’s available to watch for FREE online.
WHAT I ATE THIS WEEK….
We’re still mostly fasting so, honestly, I haven’t eaten much… and of the things I’ve eaten they weren’t very exciting. At least nothing exciting enough to take a photo of.
I did play around with a Pressure Cooker Cake recipe today to celebrate the boy’s birthday… soon (like as in when I get my my amazing new camera) I’ll be sharing my doggie birthday cake recipe and how to make a cake in the pressure cooker instructions.
THE BEAUTY OF REAL LIFE…
2017, Week #2 and I’m (still) without a camera …. I feel totally out of sorts but rest assured that as soon as my amazing new camera is here I’ll be sharing with you the beauty I find.
I received my camera but there was a scratch on the LCD and for the money invested, I couldn’t settle on a camera that had a blemish. So it had to be returned… and returns take too long.
So, here’s the thing. I really love blogging and but don’t take this the wrong way, I’m ready for a little something, um, different.
Don’t feel like I’m abandoning HSITK, it’s not going anywhere and even though I’m not posting as frequently right now (fasting = no fun recipes) I will be soon.
but… BUT… I’m expanding my voice.
I’m passionate about eating healthy and all things real food… but being honest… there are also amazing things that happen in my kitchen that aren’t HISTK appropriate.
I’m going to be launching a new, alter-ego to this site which will be called “Let Me Lick The Spoon” (don’t you love the name!?!) where I’ll be sharing recipes that are not health-focused… still real food based, but not as healthy as what I share here… like my amazing White Chocolate Macadamia Cookies.
“Let Me Lick The Spoon” will feature recipes you’ll want for those special occasions, celebrations, cheat days or the 20% of your 80/20 lifestyle.
Right now I’m setting up the site & having a logo designed – hoping to start posting recipes in Late February.
