Perfectly Portioned Coconut Oil

Perfectly Portioned Coconut Oil - No Fuss, Less Mess with all the health benefits of coconut oil!Every time I got my gallon bucket of coconut oil out, I always thought there has to be an easier way! Then the other morning when giving Hercules, our puppy, his morning scoop of coconut oil, I had a great idea….Perfectly Portioned Coconut Oil!! What if I had little 1 tablespoon solid portions of coconut oill, I could give one to the dog as a treat, toss one in my morning coffee or even quickly use a couple in a skillet when making dinner?! No more messing with the bucket, no more dirty spoons..

Since coconut oil becomes liquid at 76 degrees F, so you can melt it over low heat. Then pour it into ice cube trays (I love these with the soft pop out bottom!) let the coconut oil cool to solidify, then POP them out! I keep mine in the fridge, just in case my kitchen gets warm, I don’t want my cubes to melt!! Hercules loves his coconut oill treats almost as much as I love the convince of pre-made portions of coconut oil for cooking!

  1. Good Morning!! I have just stumbled across your website looking for natural treats and treatments for my own furbabies (Charlie {cat} 2 yr old, Louie {dog} 10 years old and I rescued from Louisana at the hurricanes) and I am in love with your posts and recipes. My husband and I are on a new adventure of eating healthy, naturally, and low-carb. I actually discovered your page while sipping my BPC at work (shhh!) and as much as I don’t want to leave just yet – I could peruse your site for hours! – I need to get back to work! Haha! Thank you for all the wonderful information and recipes. I can’t wait to continue to read your posts and try your recipes. Have a great day! ~Jenn

  2. Please do not give your dog coconut oil as it can cause pancreatitis in some dogs. My dog is fighting for her life after I gave her homemade coconut oil treats. It has cost me more than $2000 in vet bills so far.

    1. Anita – I’m so sorry that your dog has been sick – however your stance that coconut oil caused pancreatitis is very incorrect.

Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are a form of fat that does not require pancreatic enzymes for digestion, so it is well tolerated by dogs with chronic pancreatitis, EPI, and other forms of fat malabsorption. MCTs can be used to increase calories, and to help with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins for dogs who cannot tolerate other forms of fat in their diets. MCTs may help to reduce triglyceride levels in the blood and prevent pancreatitis that is caused by hyperlipidemia, though it does not lower cholesterol levels.

MCTs are found in coconut oil, and small amounts are found in dairy fat. Purina Veterinary Diets EN Canine Formula, one of the prescription diets recommended for dogs recovering from pancreatitis (but not a dog food I would ever feed my dog), uses coconut oil to supply 22 to 34 percent of its fat. MCT oil is also available, but MCT oil is not very palatable, so you may find coconut oil easier to use.

Coconut oil is 63 percent medium-chain fatty acids (8 percent caprylic, 7 percent capric, and 48 percent lauric), and 36 percent longer-chain fatty acids (16 percent myristic, 9 percent palmitic, 2 percent stearic, 7 percent oleic, 2 percent linoleic), while MCT oil is made up solely of the shortest of the medium-chain fatty acids, caprylic and capric acids. If your dog has problems with coconut oil, MCT oil may still be an option.

When feeding coconut oil, it’s best to use virgin (unrefined) oil sold in glass jars. You can give as much as 1 teaspoon per 10 lbs of body weight daily, but start with much less and increase only gradually as you see your dog can tolerate it.

      1. Hi, My cat has a big flea problem and he’s been coughing up furball’s he has long hair and I want to use something natural so I want to try this but I don’t see how much process you use with the oil.I was wondering what the brewers yeast/coconut oil combination , How much do you use for each?

  3. Hi Hayley,

The ice cube trays you use with the soft pop out bottoms, do they really measure out exactly 1 tablespoon? I have some old ice cube trays that I tested out with 1 tablespoon of water, and the water level went to the 2/3 level. I hesitate to use my old trays because I really want to keep to 1 tablespoon of coconut oil each to watch my calories. Thanks.

    1. filled to the very top they are a tablespoon – however it depends on the spoon itself some are a little larger or smaller 🙂

  4. I am truly glad to glance at this web site posts which includes plenty of useful
facts, thanks for providing such information.

  6. Where have you been? I just found your site, the buffalo cauliflower, the puppy treats, the perfectly portioned coconut oil….thank you, following!

  7. We’ve been doing this, too! So handy when you’re in a hurry in the kitchen. I like the size of your cubes better, though. 🙂

  8. Wow ! Why did no one think of this before. Great idea. I’ll definitely be doing this with mine as well, my jar is so big and heavy but with a really skinny opening (I always get it all over my hands when trying to get it out) Your way sounds so easy. Thanks

    1. Shannon, I use Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil.. Here’s a link to their page
      http://secure.ttpurchase.com/4109C21B-1E0B-90B3-0EC44E461675E416
I use the gold label for cold/raw use (since it’s more expensive) and the Organic Expeller Pressed for cooking/pets

      1. Their so called “cold press” or “raw” is not cold pressed…. its heated to remove moisture and then expeller pressed. Cold pressed is done by centrifuge process only that use gravity to separate water from oil. Heat in oil destroy all enzymes what makes oil hard to digest as its simply processed food that need to be digest by enzymes of your body. Cold pressed oils without heat applied goes through natural enzymatic process and are easy to digest.

        1. Mark – Thanks for your comment. Tropical Traditions is VERY transparent about their process and has not mis-represented how they ‘make’ coconut oil. If the addition of even light heat destroyed all the enzymes in the oil a
nd made it hard to digest as you’ve said – then surly it would never be recommend for cooking 🙂

The same theory can be applied to ALL natural, living foods. Plants and Animals, when heated, loose nutrition, thus making them less healthy cooked. I agree that RAW is best but I’m not interested in eating an entirely raw diet.

“This Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil is a truly unrefined coconut oil. This coconut oil is made on Mt. Banahaw and surrounding areas from coconuts. Coconuts are used fresh (within 24-48 hours of harvest) from small family farms on Mt. Banahaw and other rural places in Quezon Province, the coconut capital of the Philippines. Only the highest quality coconuts are hand-picked from each harvest. The volcanic soil of Mt. Banahaw makes these coconuts some of the most nutritionally rich coconuts in the world! Testing done in independent laboratories on coconut oil antioxidants reveals higher levels of phenolic antioxidants than other coconut oils. The fresh coconut meat is shredded and then the water from inside the coconuts is added to make coconut milk (wet-milled). The coconut milk is then allowed to sit for about half a day, while the oil naturally separates from the heavier water. The oil is then heated for a short time and filtered from the curds (coconut solids). No chemicals or high-heat (e.g. steam deodorization) treatment is used, and this oil contains no trans fatty acids. We do NOT mass produce this oil. It is made by families who are coconut farmers using old-fashioned traditional methods that have been used in the Philippines for hundreds of years. The families who produce the oil are also trained according to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards and re-certified each year. This high-grade Virgin Coconut Oil has a long shelf life due to the high antioxidant properties. The Gold Label Standard is our highest standard for Virgin Coconut Oil. “

  9. This is an AWESOME idea!! …but where can I get a gallon bucket of coconut oil? I only see the small jars at the grocery store.

  10. I am forever purchasing one lb jars of coconut oil. Where do you get the five gallons? Many thanks :0)

  11. Awesome Idea.. I use coconut oil for everything, from healing cut to easing the discomfort of sunburns, to protecting my skin while I work (in the sun). ((Commercial sunscreen is very dangerous, and *IS* the leading cause of skin cancer. http://www.naturalnews.com/001264_sunscreen_sun_lotion.html, http://www.aolnews.com/2010/05/24/study-many-sunscreens-may-be-accelerating-cancer/ , http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/home/sunscreen-giving-you-cancer.htm http://inhabitat.com/study-suggests-that-sunscreen-could-cause-skin-cancer/ )). \
